Queen Elizabeth I

Born Sept. 1533 to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth reigned as Queen of England and Ireland from November 1558 until her death in March 1603, ending the Tudor line. She never married, and was often referred to as the 'virgin' queen.

  • She established the English Protestant church, which later became the Church of England.

  • Spoke multiple languages including French, Italian, Latin, and Greek.

  • Obtained one of the greatest military victories in English history against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

  • English drama flourished under her rule, producing such playwrights as William Shakespeare.
